March 8, 2026 (COLUSA COUNTY) - A local senior is breathing a sigh of relief this month after a critical intervention by Colusa County Health and Human Services (HHS) prevented what would have been a devastating descent into homelessness.

Senior Faces Risk of Losing Stable Housing in Colusa County

The crisis began when the resident, a 65-year-old Colusa local, was blindsided by a significant rent discrepancy. Due to an administrative oversight, she was not made aware of the mounting balance for 12 months. Once the error was finally identified, the low-income resident was served with a "40-Day Pay in Full or Quit" notice for a nearly $2,800 debt.

For a senior living on a fixed income, manifesting that amount of capital in such a short window was an impossible task.

The Toll of Housing Insecurity

The threat of losing one's home is a unique form of trauma. For this resident, the sudden fear of being unsheltered was overwhelming. As a person in long-term recovery, the threat to her housing stability was not just a financial crisis, but a direct threat to the peace and progress she has worked so hard to maintain.

The situation became so dire that she began experiencing frequent nightmares and panic attacks, eventually seeking assistance from Behavioral Health services to manage the acute stress and psychological impact caused by the looming eviction and the pressure of the 40-day deadline.

The resident, who asked to remain anonymous, shared the depth of the crisis:

"It was one of the most frightening times of my life. I felt totally powerless. Without HHS's help, my cat and I would have been living in my car."

A Decisive Response

Recognizing the vulnerability of the situation, Colusa County Health and Human Services stepped in to bridge the gap. By providing the $2,800 necessary to clear the debt, they didn't just pay a bill—they preserved a life’s stability. Without this rapid response, this vulnerable senior would have surely faced life on the streets.

Homelessness prevented by HHS quick actions.

A Partnership for Prevention

Colusa County Recovery wishes to formally acknowledge the vital work Health and Human Services is performing.

While long-term housing solutions are essential, homelessness prevention is often the most humane and cost-effective tool available to our community.

We applaud the dedication of the HHS housing team and their leadership for their commitment to protecting our most vulnerable neighbors. We look forward to their continued success in the sectors of transitional housing, permanent housing, and prevention, ensuring that no vulnerable Colusa County resident is forced to endure the trauma of displacement or the tragedy of homelessness.
