Is the Struggle for Affordable Internet Officially Over?

Imagine trying to help your child with their homework, but the internet keeps cutting out because you can't afford a stable connection. Or picture desperately searching for a job, but missing out on opportunities because you can't access online applications. This was the reality for countless families in Colusa and neighboring counties when the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) ran out of funding and was ended.

For many low-income households and seniors on fixed incomes, the ACP was a crucial resource, providing a much-needed discount on essential internet service. But with that program gone, many are left struggling.

As someone who works with at-risk populations, many of whom are low-income, I've seen this struggle firsthand. More and more, people are forced to rely solely on their cell phones for internet access because they can't afford the cost of broadband or satellite internet for their laptops, home computers, and streaming services.

Even our own website traffic reflects this trend, with mobile devices now outpacing laptops. This shift highlights the urgent need for affordable internet options, especially with the rising cost of living.

Race Communications Steps Up with a Budget-Friendly Option

However, there's good news. Race Communications, known for their incredibly fast fiber optic network and commitment to technological innovation, has stepped up to address this need by offering a $35 a month plan with speeds up to 300 Mbps. This plan includes a Wi-Fi router and free installation for most homes.

Closing The Digital Divide

This is a significant step forward in bridging the digital divide and making the internet more affordable, especially for those living in subsidized housing and families receiving government assistance.

When all communities, regardless of size or location, have equal access to connect, learn, and thrive in the digital world, we all benefit. Affordable internet access is not a luxury; it's a necessity for full participation in today's technologically advancing society.
